SAND STONE UTENSILS IN INDIA

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is coarsely grained and formed by a process called ‘consolidation’ and ‘compaction’. Sand stones are tough and are hard by nature. These stones look reddish-brown in color, and at times are also white, pink, beige, buff, gray or yellow, etc. in color. These stones are useful for making domestic items like utensils and commercial items like tiles and handcrafted furniture, toys, statuettes, etc. They are also used in flooring and walls. They are found in desert areas, seabeds and riverbeds.

Handmade Sand Stone Utensils

Properties of Sandstone
  • They have high mechanical strength.
  • Water and Air resistant.
  • Alkali and acid resistant.
  • Low in water absorption.
All these properties make this stone suitable for the manufacture of kitchenware. Sandstone utensils are made mainly in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India where sandstone mines are very common.
